I’ve been using GNU make on Linux for quite a few years now, and I love it. It works very well, both when I’m coding and when I’m testing my code. Since I develop in C++, I use GNU make to build my programs and libraries.
But I have a problem. I often want to distribute my code, and I don’t want to use GNU make. The GNU Makefiles are a bit too complex for most people. I want to use a simple make file. But I still want the support of GNU make, so I can easily switch from one to another.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and I decided to look for a solution. I found two options: Distcc and Pegasus.
Distcc is a software project management tool based on GNU make. It provides a very simple Makefile, but when you want to use it, you need to compile distcc itself. This means that you can only use it once per compilation.
Another problem: If you want to compile your code in parallel, it means that you need to compile distcc itself in parallel. This means that you need a cluster of computers (or a single computer running in parallel mode).
