Remove asparagus roots from shipping box immediately & untie the bundles. Do not water your asparagus roots upon arrival. For best results, plant them as soon as possible. If you need to keep roots longer than two weeks, untie bunch and spread roots out. Store in a cool, dry place until planting time.

Asparagus plants (Asparagus officinalis) are perennial vegetables that produce tasty, tender spears year after year. With proper care and maintenance, asparagus plants can produce in your garden for over 15 years! Asparagus varieties are available in two color options: traditional green asparagus, which is a more vigorous grower, and the burgundy-purple asparagus, which produces sweeter, more tender spears. Available as year-old, bare-root crowns, asparagus plants should be planted in nutrient-rich soil in the spring or fall. Once mature, you can start harvesting your first home-grown spears in just two growing seasons.


Asparagus grows best in well drained sandy soil. Plant the crowns about 20cm apart in rows about 45cm apart. Let the plants go to seed for the first couple of years and feed them well to build up energy in their roots. You can then begin harvesting them sustainably for many years.


Lift the asparagus crowns in June / July and separate them into individual plants. Using a spade, wedge open the bed and insert the crown with the roots in a fan shape. Space plants 30 cm apart in full sun. Water well and fertilise with an organic fertiliser every Aug / Sept.


Asparagus is a vegetable that requires patience to grow as it can take 1-2 years to become harvestable after planting bare asparagus roots, but these plants can produce harvests for a decade or longer.
