As of mid-2022, there were no federal laws banning semiautomatic assault weapons, military-style .50 caliber rifles, handguns, or large-capacity magazines. There was also no federal requirement for those purchasing a gun to have any firearm safety training. There was a federal prohibition on assault weapons and on large-capacity magazines between 1994 and 2004, but Congress allowed these restrictions to expire.

Firearms in Canada are divided into three classes: nonrestricted weapons, such as ordinary rifles and shotguns; restricted, such as handguns and semiautomatic rifles or shotguns; and prohibited, such as automatic weapons. It is illegal to own a fully automatic weapon unless it was registered before 1978.

Modern gun control efforts in the United Kingdom (UK) have also been precipitated by extraordinary acts of violence that sparked public outrage. In 1987, a lone gunman armed with two semiautomatic rifles and a handgun went on a six-hour shooting spree roughly seventy miles west of London, killing more than a dozen people and then himself. In the wake of the incident, known as the Hungerford massacre, Britain introduced the Firearms (Amendment) Act, which expanded the list of banned weapons, including certain semiautomatic rifles, and increased registration requirements for other weapons.

Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. made Marlin lever-action rifles are American-made, manufactured with great pride and attention to detail. You can expect the same time-honored features of the traditional Marlin rifle elevated by Ruger's exacting standards of quality.

Semi-automatic rifles and shotguns are extremely common as Canadian hunting arms, which is why firearms advocates say the ban would likely apply to millions of guns currently in active use with Canadian hunters and sport shooters.

But with many Canadian hunting rifles effectively being banished to gun safes by the amendment, the effect would be that Canadian hunters would mostly be limited to firearms using pumps, lever or bolts to manually load cartridges into the chamber before each pull of the trigger.

As previously reported by Guns.com, in May 2020, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a sweeping gun ban on over 1,500 models of military-style assault weapons" which would affect some 125,000 semi-auto rifles. The ban prohibited the use of those firearms while a government program set for 2023 would result in confiscation and negligible reimbursement. Parliament was suspended at the time of the ban, due to COVID-19, resulting in no opposition to the proposal. Trudeau used an Order of Council, roughly akin to an Executive Order here in the States, to pass the ban.

Presently, Canadian law classifies firearms into three categories: prohibited, restricted, and non-restricted. Prohibited firearms include military-grade assault weapons such as AK-47s and sawn-off rifles or shotguns. Handguns are generally classified as restricted weapons, while rifles and shotguns are usually non-restricted. The AR-15 rifles used by the San Bernardino suspects is classified as restricted.

But these laws did not stop suspected San Bernardino shooters Tashfeen Malik and her husband Syed Rizwan Farook from allegedly obtaining AR-15 assault rifles, civilian variants of the M-16, standard infantry weapon of the U.S. military since Vietnam.

The Criminal Code classifies firearms into threecategories: prohibited, restricted, and non-restricted. Prohibited firearmsinclude fully automatic firearms, sawed-off rifles and shotguns and otherfirearms prescribed to be prohibited in the regulations. Handguns are generallyclassified as restricted, while rifles and shotguns, also known as long-guns,are usually non-restricted.

In 2020, following the mass shooting in Nova Scotia, thefederal government amended regulations by Order in Council to reclassify asprohibited over 1,500 models and variants of assault-style firearms, particularly semi-automatic rifles.

Most (63%) gang firearm-related homicides in 2020 werecommitted with a handgun. In both periods examined in this report, a handgunwas the most common firearm used in gang-related firearm-related homicides, butthey were proportionally fewer after 2015 (76% of gang-related homicidesbetween 2009 and 2014 and 67% between 2015 and 2020). Instead, rifles orshotguns (9% between 2009 and 2014 compared to 14% in the later period) or anunknown type of firearm (from 14% to 19% in the later period) became morecommon in gang-related homicides committed with a firearm.Note

Crimes involving other firearms (i.e., sawed-off rifles orshotguns, or fully automatic firearms) were relatively rare, accounting for 5%of firearm-related violent crime in urban areas, 8% in the rural South, and 5%in the rural North.
